A topic as far-reaching as the currently-underway data communications network transformation deserves more than a cursory look--especially in the realm of Carrier Ethernet. Last November, the Metro Ethernet Forum published its Third Network Vision and Strategy, a document that no doubt will continue to be influence decision-makers into 2015 and beyond.
This Third Network vision combines on-demand agility and internet ubiquity with Carrier Ethernet 2.0 performance and security assurances. It depends heavily on network as a service principles, involving a variety of much-talked-about elements like virtual machines and virtual network functions (VNFs).

"This approach overcomes existing constraints by defining service abstractions that hide the complexity of underlying technologies and network layers from the applications and users of the services," MEF explains in the paper.

Read the full document for a deep look at the future of virtualization and Carrier Ethernet.
