Prediction: Virtualization Will Be Major Theme for Telecom in 2016

Pull up a chair and block off some time to read all about what is likely to happen in the telecom industry during the New Year! The prognosticators have dusted off their crystal balls and are in full swing getting out 2016 predictions before December's hourglass runs out. Among them: RCR Wireless News, which recently published its "2016 Predictions: VoLTE, VoWiFi, 5G, IOT, Hiring Trends and more" report.

GEN15: Panel Explores Real-World vCPE Strategies

Although virtualized customer premises equipment (vCPE) has been deployed for years, related terminology and definitions are dynamic, creating some confusion. But, fundamentally, it's not a new technology; many service providers are using vCPE as their primary strategy. How do these deployments look in the real world? That was the main topic of discussion during the "NFV-Based Virtual CPE Strategies & Deployment Options For Enhancing CE 2.0 Services and Supporting Service Innovation" panel at MEF's GEN15 event.

Trending: Network Performance News This Week, December 6-12, 2015

This week's roundup of telecom news touches on four topics: the Internet of Things as a generational shift, real-world 5G, the inter-related dynamics of virtualization technologies (SDN, NFV), and the roll of small cells in wireless expansion.

3 Ways CenturyLink is Using Virtualization to be More Services-Centric

CenturyLink has its sights set on a software-defined world, saying it will have 40% of its global IP network virtualized this year, part of a larger goal to create a completely virtualized IP network by 2018.

Light Reading Editor-at-Large Carol Wilson recently interviewed James Feger, CenturyLink's VP of network strategy and development, and shared what she learned in an article that basically boils down to three points about how the global communications service provider is adopting virtualization and what it plans to do with the technology.

GEN15: Router Toss Highlights vCPE Moving Mainstream

On-premises edge routers are being phased out in favor of network functions virtualization (NFV)-based network interface devices (NIDs) to reduce footprint, deployment time, and cost. Carriers are increasingly embracing this strategy, moving services to virtual appliances using NFV/virtualized network functions (VNFs).

Small Cells for Cable MSOs: Big Backhaul Impact

The much-anticipated small cell era has finally begun in earnest, and cable MSOs are playing a starring role by leveraging their technologies, infrastructure, and fiber linesand flexibilityto support backhaul for small cell networks. Despite the deployment challenges involved, this technology has the potential to support the rapid growth of of smartphones and mobile data traffic, and the emergence of 4G/LTE (and soon 5G) wireless networks, by boosting coverage and capacity, and maintaining or even enhance subscriber quality of service (QoS) without breaking the bank or requiring new cell towers and fiber lines.

To LTE and Beyond: Telefonica Case Study

The evolution of mobile telecommunications isn't always a direct step from one technology to another, nor should it be. Often, a hybrid approach is the best strategy to deliver exceptional quality of service (QoS) while expanding and improving coverage. This is the case for Telefónica, whose LTE (4G) growth strategy relies—interestingly enough—on improving reliability of their 3G network. For this, they selected a performance assurance solution from Accedian to deliver a new level of customer experience to mobile subscribers across their global footprint.

vCPE: Technical and Business Drivers

For many years, closed architecture and service delivery models have held back enterprise and residential communications service innovation. Network functions virtualization (NFV) and virtualized customer premises equipment (vCPE) is changing all that: leveraging open compute platforms and distributed software (cloud or customer premises) can transform the landscape in a single step.

Trending: Network Performance News This Week, November 15-21, 2015

This week's roundup of telecom news is mostly about the ways service providers and network operators are adopting new technologies to stay competitive. For Comcast, that means Wi-Fi calling using network functions virtualization (NFV). AT&T is using software-defined networking (SDN) for Ethernet on demand. Telefonica, meanwhile, is focused on fixed and mobile video services, and Cox is selling a new small cell service. Also in the mix: Alcatel-Lucent's take that data center interconnects desperately need SDN, and the conclusion that distributed antenna systems (DAS) and cloud automation are changing the way network testing is done.

Insight: What’s Hot in Telecom Standards and Technology

In a previous post, we explored some of the newest lingo floating around the telecom world. Some of the major themes during SDN and OpenFlow World Congress, however, are beyond the scope of a glossary, so here we take a deeper look at Application-Aware Network Routing (AAR), Lifecycle Service Orchestration (LSO), Mobile Edge Compute (MEC), Software-Defined WAN (SD WAN), and various flavors of Virtualized Customer Premises Equipment (vCPE).

The only reason for time...

Originally published on Automated Trader
by Ian Salmon, Market Consultant - Finance, Accedian

"The only reason for time…." According to Albert Einstein "…is so that everything doesn't happen at once".

Consider yourself in the shoes of a timekeeper of athletic events. The stakes are high, consequently the choice of tools for the job imperative. Endurance or sprint? This question is at the forefront when it comes to providing the appropriate accuracy and granularity - seconds, tenths and hundredths of a second for a 100 metre race - hours, minutes and seconds to the marathon.

Insight: The Business Case for vCPE

The push toward virtualizing networks has three main business case drivers: 1) CapEx reduction, 2) OpEx reduction, and 3) service agility/improved QoE. These are compelling enough that even for operators taking a wait-and-see approach to virtualization in general, they can start testing out NFV at their service edge with relatively low risk, low complexity, and a tantalizing ROI.

Time is of the Essence: Accedian at European Trading Architecture Summit

Significant attention is being paid to the potential impact of MiFID II regulations on financial markets, when they go into effect in 2017. However, one aspect of these changes tends to get overlooked: definitions in Article 50 regarding accuracy and granularity of the timestamping of trade flow packets that must be logged for financial compliance reporting. Accedian is keeping a close eye on this and will be discussing it at the 2015 European Trading Architecture Summit in London on November 19.

We are a Lead Sponsor at the highly-regarded financial markets trading technology event, which will be will be attended by about 200 C-suite business professionals representing banks, brokers, exchanges, and other financial organizations.

What's the big deal about timestamping? There are two aspects, said Ian Salmon, Accedian Market Consultant - Finance, in a recent Automated Trader article:
  • Scope - The new rules require most participants to timestamp every 'reportable event' in a transaction's lifecycle to millisecond or finer accuracy and granularity.
  • Breadth  -The new rules cover more assets than were previously regulated, requiring more points to be instrumented along the trade flow path: any location that can affect the outcome of a trade, including the time it executes, need to be logged.
Both factors may present significant challenges to compliance.

Exploring this topic more in depth, Salmon will represent Accedian on the following panel at the Summit:

10:45am MiFID II - Preparation, Implementation and Awareness
Questions to be explored during the panel include:
  • What is MiFID II and how does it affect trading compliance?
  • What changes need to be made so ensure you're ready for the January, 2017 MiFID II implementation deadline?
  • Will MiFID II rules change trading patterns?
  • What legislative changes are expected that relate to MiFID II?

Insight: SON Testing and Monitoring Market Opportunities and Challenges

As LTE and HetNets proliferate, network infrastructure is becoming too complex for human engineers to effectively track and monitor performance. To fill this gap, enter self-organizing networks (SON), a Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) concept. Broadly, SON describes network management and optimization technology capable of making ‘smart’ decisions—based on analysis of ‘big’ and ‘fast’ data—automatically, with no human intervention needed. This technology is characterized by plug-and-play, self-repair, and network optimization.
